Making an Entrance: Collarts x Design Show Australia

Providing students with industry connections while allowing them to apply their skills in the real world is central to Collarts’ ethos. In a landmark collaboration with Design Show Australia, Collarts’ Interior Design students were challenged to design an intriguing entrance feature, setting the stage for this year’s event through design innovation.

Jenni Woods, the Interior Design Program Leader, views this collaboration as a natural extension of Collarts’ principles. “We are so excited to be collaborating with Design Show Australia again in 2023 as Education partner. This partnership provides our students with meaningful, work-integrated learning experiences across a range of design projects.”

During a two-day intensive workshop, students were tasked with tackling a real-world brief in groups, creating unique concept designs for the event’s Entry feature. They had the chance to present their ideas to Darren Loewy, Design Show Australia’s Operations Director, and Andrew Vaughan, the Portfolio Director, showcasing their presentation skills and gaining valuable experience in engaging with external stakeholders. Additionally, they incorporated key materials provided by sponsors, Kosny Timber, EC Carpets, and Armstrong Flooring. The Entry feature designed by the students will set the tone for visitors’ first impression of the show.

Jenni Woods believes this challenge has provided students with an invaluable experience. “It is a unique experience to be immersed in innovative local and international design at the highest level in Australia.”

Alisha Lawrie and Vanessa Lane, two talented designers, emerged as the winners, demonstrating a distinct perspective and exceptional creative instincts. Their design will come to life at the event, as thousands of design enthusiasts walk through the doors and witness their creation. This collaboration offers students a unique opportunity to not only showcase their design skills but also engage in a truly immersive real-life experience.

Reflecting on her experience, Vanessa shares, “I loved working on the Design Show Australia challenge! The show is such an important part of the industry calendar so, to have the chance to be involved in the design of the entry space of the event was an amazing experience. It was such a fun couple of days, working on the brief and pitching our concept. Thanks to Collarts, The Design Show and the material suppliers for the opportunity.”
