Sydney Water Processes - Building Plan Approval (Presented by AIA)

This professional learning session will discuss what to be aware of in the initial design phase when developing, building or renovating in Sydney, providing you with crucial knowledge around requirements and clearances for Sydney Water assets. You'll explore the Sydney Water Building Plan Approval process for standard sized assets and non-standard assets, and the stages that a project require for your plans to be approved by Sydney Water, authority to commence work on site and final certification.

At the completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the role of Sydney Water and an accredited Water Servicing Coordinator (WSC) in the design and building process.

  • Identify building clearances and requirements when building near or over Sydney Water assets.

  • Describe the different types of approval processes.

  • Explain the stages, requirements, and documentation required for both In Scope and Out of Scope Building Plan Approval assessment.

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects 2021: ​

Practice Management and Professional Conduct

PC12: Provide independent, culturally responsive, and objective advice in accordance with relevant building codes, standards, technical specifications, and guidelines, and planning regulations, including climate change implications, across all aspects of architectural practice.

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design

PC28: Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences, and behavioral and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimize the performance of the project.

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation

PC43: Be able to collaborate with nominated contractors early in the documentation process to identify key construction methodology opportunities and constraints.
