Melvin is an object and furniture designer of Indian origin who completed a post-graduate degree in design from UNSW in 2021. Currently the furniture associate at Jam Factory, Adelaide. Melvin’s work is an investigation to find meaning in objects beyond their function and aesthetic. By creating objects based on narratives, he contextualizes traditional craft methods using modern technology and materials.
The Vallam Series refers to the traditional boat-making technique from the southern coasts of India where timber planks are stitched together using locally available fibre. The furniture form resembles silhouettes and sections of maritime objects, stitched together intricately with naturally dyed cotton yarn.
