Hold, Idle and Tend by Laura Butler

Design Centre Enmore

Laura Butler is a Sydney-based designer who creates products and furniture. Laura’s design process focuses on simplifying forms down to only necessary elements that celebrate the rituals of everyday life. Her work is centred on the evolving qualities of natural materials, how they polish, patina and wear with time.

Hold is a series of towel rails and hooks. Utilising readily available solid hex brass, the designs focus on simplicity of form. The hidden internal components allow for ease of installation without the need for a mounting disc. The natural satin brass finish is allowed to patina and evolve with use.

The idle daybed is a place to sit, contemplate and relax. Inspired by Japanese carpentry, the design was a pragmatic approach informed by both timber availability and utilising minimal components to establish structural integrity. Idle was achieved through an interlocking timber system negating the need for additional fixings.

Tend is a collection of ceramic slip-cast planters designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The footed form allows for adequate drainage and airflow, ideal for Sydney’s high humidity environment. Tend is created with a two-part combination of recycled porcelain, a by-product of the casting process and terracotta.
