Meet the Architect: Nick Travers of Techné Architecture + Interior Design
Nick Travers, Techné Architecture + Interior Design

In this exclusive Q&A, we delve into the insights and experiences of Nick Travers, the Founder of Techné Architecture + Interior Design. Techné Architecture + Interior Design is a dynamic Australian architecture and interior design firm known for its innovative and contemporary design approach. Based in Melbourne, the studio emphasises a strong connection between architecture and its urban context, creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically striking. Techné’s portfolio spans various sectors, including residential, commercial, and hospitality projects, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship.

What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture and  interior design, and how has your journey shaped your design style?

I am an avid drawer and this life-long interest orientated me toward the design professions as I was nearing completion of school. Ultimately, I was accepted into architecture and graduated in 1997 from Adelaide University.  I moved to Melbourne shortly after and set up Techné with Justin Northrop in the early 2000s. Our design approach has been shaped by our strong engagement in the hospitality sector and other work where we create authentically crafted, bespoke and human centric spaces and buildings.

What types of projects do you primarily work on? Do you find yourself working across different sectors, such as residential, multi-residential, or workplace environments?

We work across sectors providing integrated architecture and interior design services for hospitality, commercial, workplace, single and multi-residential projects.  We have always been diverse in our project typologies which has been interesting to bring the sensibilities of one sector into the thinking of another where appropriate. It has also been useful to navigate changing market conditions as they arise.

How do you approach balancing your client's vision and preferences with your own design expertise and aesthetic sensibilities?

We balance it by being clear about the problems we are seeking to solve for our clients. We are acutely aware of the need of our projects to align with the brand position of our client and the experience of spaces we are trying to foster for occupants/patrons/users. Techné adapts our approach to each and every project which is at the heart of all bespoke work.

In your opinion, what are some key elements or principles that every well-designed interior should incorporate?

  • To create a sense of surprise and delight.
  • To lead a design outcome with a strong concept and alignment to brand.
  • To make spaces that age well.
  • To get the space planning and flow right.
  • To think of how spaces will be used and what the experience of people will be first and foremost.

What inspires you in the design process?

To unlock a conceptual vision that can excite our clients and guide a complex process to reach a completed project.

What’s your favourite project to date and why?

Usually it’s what is currently on the drawing board, but objectively my favourite projects have been The Espy and the Garden State Hotel among many great projects we have produced over the years. They are both bold projects of scale that had a real impact in the life of Melbourne.

Where do you source new products from? How crucial is it for you to source products face-to-face and discover the latest innovations firsthand at events like trade shows?

We source products from a broad sphere.  It is absolutely crucial to ultimately source products in a face-to-face environment. Trade shows are inspiring, but we always have product representatives and samples being brought into our studio for use in our projects. Our materials library is an important area in the studio where products and finishes are curated.

Have you attended Design Show Australia before? If yes, what’s your favourite part about attending the show?

I have attended as a guest speaker and my favourite part is connecting with colleagues in the profession and finding some product inspiration along the way.
