Dr Josephine Vaughan

Dr Josephine Vaughan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle and a leading voice in low‑carbon construction, circular economy, and bio‑based building materials. Her work focuses on how innovative materials—such as low-toxic, bio‑based, reused and recycled products—can be successfully adopted in real‑world projects without compromising performance, durability, or commercial viability.

Josephine has led more than 15 major industry‑funded research projects and works closely with architects, builders, manufacturers, and policy‑makers to accelerate embodied‑carbon reduction across the built environment. She co‑leads the Circular Economy & Sustainable Construction Research Group and is known for translating research, regulation, and emerging innovation into practical pathways for industry delivery.
