Lighting Up Innovation: A Conversation with Dirk du Toit

Lighting Up Innovation: A Conversation with Dirk du Toit
MASS table lamp

In this exclusive Q&A, we explore the journey of the highly commended winner from Australia's Next Top Designer, Dirk du Toit and the MASS table lamp. Discover Dirk's inspirations, choice of materials, and his experience participating in the Australia's Next Top Designer.

The ANTD competition, held in collaboration with Workshopped and sponsored by Flexmirror Australia, Kanebridge News, and Axolotl, took place from 13-15 June, showcasing and launching the careers of Australia's rising design stars.

How did you come up with the initial idea for MASS?

I wanted to design a table lamp that felt sculptural and practical - combining simplicity and functionality with the warmth of timber.

What materials did you use for your design, and why did you choose them?

I chose Walnut because of its rich, warm qualities and my passion for working with timber. This project also allowed me to experiment with lighting for the first time, blending both elements through an iterative creative process.

Are there any other projects or designs you are currently working on that you are excited about?

I’m excited to finalise MASS for commercial production and can’t wait to see it launched. I constantly have ideas brewing in my sketchbook, so there’s always something new on the horizon.

How has showcasing your work in Australia’s Next Top Designer impacted you personally and professionally?

Meeting with other emerging designers and sharing our design journeys has been incredibly inspiring personally. Professionally, the experience highlighted the importance of networking and the hustle required to promote your work within the design industry.

Who has been your biggest influence or mentor in your design journey?

That's a tough one - there isn’t just one person. I've learnt so much from working with various designers, brands and manufacturers - including clients and friends! I feel that it all influences and continues to shape my design journey.

How do you perceive the evolution of Australian design, and how does it compare to design communities in other countries?

Post-COVID, there’s been a noticeable increase in demand for locally designed and made products here in Australia, which is exciting. We're emerging with our own style and the local audience is watching more closely than ever - it feels authentic and new.

What insights did you gain from showcasing your designs at Design Show Australia, and would you recommend participating in the ANTD competition?

It’s a fantastic platform to showcase your work, meet fellow designers, and expand your network. I highly recommend it to any emerging designer looking to advance their career.
